4. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
4.1 System Overview
Safety edge sensors are used to create a sensing area that may consist of a single edge or a combination of
edges. When the sensing edge is compressed to actuation, the (electrically closed) condition is detected by the
safety interface module (SIM). When appropriately configured, the (SIM) switches off its output relays and/or PNP
drivers, ideally causing dangerous motion to cease or be prevented.
4.2 Edge Sensor Design
4.2.1 Internal Construction
Each Tapeswitch sensing edge utilizes
Controflex
ribbon switch technology for its electrical switching
component. Each edge is designed to focus applied force (along the reference direction of the sensor) toward the
internal
Controflex
ribbon switch, thereby creating switch closure and supplying a signal to the SIM for evaluation
and "Stop" command.
4.2.2 Chemical Resistance
Tapeswitch safety edge sensors are constructed utilizing several material compounds. All materials are resistant
to chemicals commonly found in an industrial environment.
Please see the following table to determine the material best suited to your application. Upon request, Tapeswitch
can supply a small sample of edge material for your own chemical testing. Please contact

4.2.3. Combining of Sensors
When multiple edge sensors are used in combination, they must be wired in series, such that the SIM monitors
the entire array as if it were one normally-open switch. Actuation of any sensing edge segment will result in a
signal transition at the SIM’s monitoring input.
