6.8 At the Deployment Site
1. If connection to the water main is via a hydrant, the hydrant should be inspected first to ensure that
the frost plug is in place and sound.
2. Lay PIPEMINDER-S on its back with a clear view of the sky (on the roadside, on the pavement or on
your car).
3. Install and connect the GPRS antenna (if not already connected).
4. Connect the battery.
5. The screen will display, in sequence:
o
The unique serial number of the PIPEMINDER-S;
o
“ PipeMinder Syrinix Ltd” ;
o
“Registering on Cellular Network”;
o
The IMEI number of the GPRS module and the signal strength at your current location;
o
The battery voltage;
o
“Waiting for GPS” ;
o
“GPS Locked” once the internal clock has been set or “GPS Timeout” after 1 hour if no signal
is available;
o
“Connect Pressure, Orient Antenna” once the PIPEMINDER-S is ready for connection to the
pipeline.
6. Connect the flow meter cable to the flow meter, if one is being used.
7. Connect the pressure port to the pipeline taking care to ensure that all air is expelled. This can be
achieved by partially inserting the PIPEMINDER-S 21KA fitting into the quick release hose fitting,
orienting so that the male connector is pointing up, and slightly opening the valve to allow some flow
which will expel any air. Once you are satisfied all the air is expelled, complete the connection.
8. If required, hang the battery and PIPEMINDER-S by their cords.
6.9 Signal Strength
The signal strength reported during start-up comes straight from the GPRS modem within PIPEMINDER-S. It
is of the form
“CSQ: 13,99” where the first number, “13”, represents the reported signal strength.

1 Weak signal
2..30 Medium Signal
31 Strong Signal
99 No Signal
