1I-5 Starting System:
Starter Motor will not Run
Step Action Yes No
1 1) Check main fuse and connection.
2) Check circuit fuse (for starter motor relay) and
connection.
Are main fuse and circuit fuse good condition?
Go to step 2. Repair or replace.
2 1) Disconnect lead wire connector “A” from magnetic
switch “S” terminal.
2) Measure voltage between lead wire connector “A” and
body ground when turning ignition switch to “START”.
Is voltage 12 V (battery voltage)?
• Faulty starter motor.
• Poor wire connection.
• Substitute known-
good starter motor
and recheck.
Go to step 3.
3 1) Check starter relay “Click” sound when turning ignition
switch to “START”.
Is there “Click” sound?
• Burnt contact point or
poor contacting
action of starter relay.
• Open circuit between
relay and magnetic
switch.
Go to step 4.
4 1) Turn ignition switch “OFF”.
2) Remove the starter motor relay.
3) Check for proper connection to starter motor relay.
4) If OK, then check starter motor relay.
Refer to “Starter Motor Relay Inspection” (Page 1I-16).
Is it in good condition?
Go to step 5. Replace starter motor
relay.
5 1) Check the neutral switch.
Refer to “Neutral Switch Inspection” (Page 1I-17).
Is it in good condition?
Go to step 6. Replace neutral switch.
6 1) Check the ignition switch.
Refer to “Ignition Switch Inspection” (Page 1I-16).
Is it in good condition?
Go to step 7. Replace ignition switch.
7 1) Check the emergency stop switch.
Refer to “Emergency Stop Switch Inspection” in Section
1C (Page 1C-15).
Is it in good condition?
Go to step 8. Replace emergency
stop switch.
8 1) Turn the ignition switch “OFF”.
2) Install the starter motor relay.
3) Disconnect the ECM connector at ECM.
4) Check for proper connection to ECM at each terminal.
5) Connect the 36 pin test cord set between ECM and the
main harness.
6) Check the ECM power source circuit.
Refer to “ECM Power and Ground Circuit Check” in
Section 1A (Page 1A-15).
Is it in good condition?
Go to step 9. Power source line open,
shorted or poor
connection.
9 1) Measure voltage between No.2 terminal of ECM and
body ground when turning ignition switch to “START”.
Is the voltage approx. 0.5 V?
Go to step 10. Starter motor relay
control circuit open,
shorted or poor
connection.
10 1) Measure voltage between No.49 terminal of ECM and
body ground with ignition switch “ON”.
Is the voltage approx. 12 V?
Go to step 11. Neutral switch circuit
open, shorted or poor
connection.
