6-3 System Fans
The 5017C-LF employs two 4-cm fans to provide cooling. The fans can adjust their
speed according to the heat level sensed in the system, which results in more ef-
fi cient and quieter fan operation. Fan speed is controlled by a setting in BIOS (see
Chapter 7). Each fan in a set has its own separate tachometer.
Note: It is very important that the chassis top cover is properly installed for the
airfl ow to circulate properly through the chassis and cool the components.
System Fan Failure
If a fan fails, the remaining fan will ramp up to full speed and the overheat/fan fail
LED on the control panel will blink on and off. Replace any failed fan at your earli-
est convenience with the same type and model (the system can continue to run
with a failed fan).
Replacing System Fans (Figure 6-2)
If necessary, remove the top chassis cover while the power is running to 1.
determine which fan has failed. (Never run the server for an extended period
of time with the cover removed.)
Power down the server and remove the AC power cord. 2.
Remove the fan housing from the chassis by removing the two screws which 3.
attach the housing to the chassis. These screws are located in the mount-
ing thru holes on either side of the fan housing. (See fi gure 4-6). Set these
screws aside for later use.
Disconnect the fan wiring from the connectors and carefully lift the fan hous- 4.
ing out of the chassis.
To remove the fan from the fan housing, gently push upward on the fan from 5.
the underside of the fan housing. Gently ease the fan out of the top of the fan
housing
Slide the replacement fan upwards through the bottom of the fan housing. 6.
Reconnect the fan wiring and replace the fan housing in the chassis using the 7.
mounting screws previously set aside.
