DANTE INTERCOM AUDIO ENGINE
IFB (3 Int-in)
The IFB (3-Int-in) operating mode is provided such that an IFB (talent cue) signal can be created from one pro-
gram and up to three interrupt Dante audio sources. It’s very similar to the previously discussed IFB (1 Int-in)
mode with the difference being that this mode allows connection of up to three independent interrupt inputs. This
allows multiple sources of “talk audio” to serve as interrupt sources without the need for sub-mixing or otherwise
combining the independent interrupt audio signals. And for optimal performance, this IFB mode also ensures that
detection (“triggering”) will take place independently for each of the three inputs. The Model 5422A implements
the IFB (3 Int-in) mode such that both a program with interrupt and program-only output channels are created.
Separate IFB detection resources are provided for the three Dante receiver (input) audio channels specified for
interrupt. Detection for all three of the interrupt inputs will take place using either the voice-operated (VOX) or
voice-operated (TOX) method. With the latter method, a high-frequency tone (typically an 18 or 20 kHz sine-wave
signal) is used to trigger or “key” the IFB function. No external interrupt active data or hardware signal is required.
The Model 5422A’s IFB (3 Int-in) mode was specifically
implemented so that professional talent cue (IFB) sig-
nals could be created using multiple Dante interrupt
audio sources. As with the other IFB mode, this allows
support for both local and REMI/At-Home applications
without the need for matrix intercom systems or exten-
sive hardware. Compatibility is provided such that up
to three independent sources of interrupt audio can be
directly used to create the IFB function. For example,
three of the Studio Technologies Model 348 Intercom
Stations could serve as the IFB interrupt audio sources
without needing to “pre-mix” their audio channels.
Each IFB (3 Int-in) section uses four Dante receiver
(input) channels and two Dante transmitter (output)
channels. In addition, each group has two Dante
transmitter (output) channels that are specified as
unavailable. Three Dante receiver (input) channels
are designated for use as interrupt audio sources. The
fourth receiver channel is designated as the program
audio source. For the two IFB outputs, one Dante
transmitter (output) channel is designated to be the
program with interrupt (“interrupt”) channel while the
other serves as the non-interrupt (“program” or “pro
-
gram only”) channel. The number of IFB sections that
