2. What Do The Terms "Passive" and "Active"
Crossover Mean?
Electronically speaking, the term passive means that the
device would not require any external power source to
function such as a battery or an external electrical power
source. In the case or a passive crossover, usually mounted
inside the speaker cabinet, all you need to do is connect the
speaker output of your amplifier to the full range input of
your speaker system. No other adjustments are needed to the
passive crossover system. Just plug in and play. (see figure 1.)
1. Why Do You Need A Crossover?
Speaker components(woofers, horns and tweeters) are only
designed to reproduce a certain range of sound.
Simply stated, a tweeter will not reproduce the sound of a
big bass drum, and a woofer will not reproduce the sound
of a cymbal's "sizzle". If you tried to feed the sound of the
bass drum through the tweeter, it would probably destroy the
delicate, lightweight membrane or diaphragm that enables it
to accurately reproduce the sizzle of the cymbal. While you
probably will not damage a woofer by running the cymbal's
sound through it, you simply will not hear very much sound!
The woofer's cone is much too large and heavy to accurately
reproduce the cymbal's sizzle. A crossover makes sure the
correct sounds are being fed to the appropriate speaker
components.
2. 크로스오버에서 “패시브”와 “액티브”라는 용어는 무엇을

전지적으로 말한다면, "패시브“는 외부의 전원 공급이 필요하지
않은 것을 말합니다. 패시브 크로스오버의 경우 일반적으로 스피커

1. 크로스오버가 필요한 이유가 무엇일까요?
스피커 컴포넌트(우퍼, 혼 그리고 트위터)는 일정 사운드 영역의 재
생성만을 위해 설계되었습니다.
간단하게 말해서, 트위터는 큰 베이스 드럼의 소리를 낼 수 없고 우
퍼는 심벌즈의 소리를 재생해 낼 수 없습니다. 만약 트위터를 통해
베이스 드럼의 소리를 내려고 한다면 분명 심벌즈의 소리를 내는
섬세하고 가벼운 멤브레인이나 진동판에 손상을 입히게 될 것입니
다. 우퍼를 통해 심벌즈의 소리를 들으려고 하면 분명 우퍼는 고장
나지는 않을 것입니다. 그러나 본래의 심벌즈 소리보다 더 크고 많
은 소리를 듣게 될 것입니다. 우퍼의 혼은 심벌즈의 소리를 내기에
너무 크고 무겁기 때문입니다.
크로스오버는 음향신호가 올바른 스피커 컴포넌트로 들어 갈 수 있
도록 해주는 장비입니다.

An active crossover would require external power, typically
from an electrical wall outlet. As in the case of the VC-23
and VC-34, it is usually an external device, placed before the
power amplifiers in the audio signal path. It does require
precise adjustments in order to match the speaker system you
are using.
For example, a three way speaker system would require a
three way active crossover.
If you are using a stereo sound system, a stereo active
