5.3. Hydraulic Fittings Guidelines (Cont.) 5.2. Shear Pin Guidelines
Shear pins are designed in such a way that they shear at a
predetermined load. When replacing shear pins, make sure
that only pins of the same grade are used.
5.3. Hydraulic Fittings Guidelines
5.3.1. Follow the tightening torques given in the table below
when tightening, replacing, or repairing any Hydraulic Fit-
tings. There are two methods to achieve proper ‘clamp
load’ on the flare connections used on Spudnik machinery.
1. Torque: Torque hydraulic fitting using a torque
wrench.
2. Flats Method: Torque hydraulic fitting by degree
of rotation or number of hex flats.

Hand Tighten the swivel nut to the mating
male flare adapter. “Hand Tight” is described
as the point where the swivel nut will no long-
er thread onto the mating connector when
moderate torque is applied with the hand or
fingers. When this is complete, wiggle the
swivel nut back and forth to ensure full en-
gagement has taken place. (See Figure 5)

Mark a line on one of the swivel nut hex flats
and extend the line onto the hex of the tube
adapter. (See Figure 6)

Using the proper wrench, turn the swivel nut
to tighten. (See Figure 7) The nut is to be
rotated clockwise the recommended degrees
of rotation or number of hex flats as stated in
the Hydraulic Fitting Torque Chart. (See Fig-
ure 8)
5.3.2. Hydraulic Flare Type (JIC) Fitting Torque Chart
A second wrench must be used to hold the coupling to
prevent the hose from twisting during assembly.
