con di tions and environment.
Important! Long periods of sustained vibrations can damage the
bear ing balls and their seat. Too high humidity can emulsify the
grease and en cour age corrosion.
Important! Intense vibrations caused by the engine or bad alignment
of the components in the electricity generating set put the bearing
under stress es that will reduce its lifespan.
7.4 Removal and replacement of components and component as-
sem blies
7.4.1 Extracting and inserting the rotor.
The following procedures presume the alternator has been sep a -
rat ed from the engine.
Dual bearing(B3 B14), cone version and SAE single bearing
version.
• Remove the tap and hammer the back of the rotor, (for B3 B14 version,
unscrew the four M10 nuts that fasten the fl ange to alternator) so that
the bearing comes free.
• Lift the rotor with a belt on the coupling side.
• Continue to drive the rotor out of the stator, gradually adapting the sling
so that the winding is not damaged.
Insert the shaft following in reverse the instructions at section
7.4.1.
Warning! When the rotor is repositioned, the alternator may loose
the re sid u al magnetism that enables it to self-excite. Before start-
ing up the gen er at ing set the alternator will therefore have to be
excited by applying a 6-12 volt current across the exciter terminals
for a sec ond, respecting the polarities.
7.4.2 Changing bearing
See section 7.4.1
• Remove the snap ring.
• Remove the bearing or bearings using a standard extractor.
• Take the new bearing or bearings and heat them (max. 100 ÷ 110°C) so
their diameter di lates before sliding them into position on the shaft.
• Insert the rotor by following in reverse the instructions at section 7.4.1.
7.4.3 Changing rotating diodes
• Extract the rotor following the instructions at section 7.4.1
• Remove the snap seger ring.
• Remove the bearing or bearings using a standard extractor.
• With a solder disconnect the fi ve cables of the rotating rectifi er
bridge
• Unscrew the three screws and remove the diode bridge.
• Fit the new rectifi er bridge, by fi xing the three screws and soldering
the fi ve cables to the rotating rectifi er bridge. Taking care to connect
the positive and the negative cables on the right position.
• Replace the rotor following in reverse the instructions given at section
7.4.1
7.4.4 Replacing components and component assemblies
When assembling after changing a part repeat the above operations in
reverse.
Important!
A bearings lifespan is closely linked to the
working con di tions and environment.
Long periods of sustained vibrations
can damage the bear ing balls and their
seat. Too high humidity can emulsify the
grease and en cour age corrosion.
Intense vibrations caused by the engine
or bad alignment of the components
in the electricity generating set put the
bearing under stress es that will reduce
its lifespan.
When the rotor is repositioned, the al ter -
na tor may loose the re sid u al magnetism
that enables it to self-excite. Before start ing
up the gen er at ing set the alternator will
there fore have to be excited by ap ply ing a 6-
12 volt current across the exciter ter mi nals
for a sec ond, re spect ing the polarities.
