The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
established ASHRAE Standard 135 which created the Building Automation and Control
Networking (BACnet) protocol. The BACnet protocol provides mechanisms by which
computerized equipment of arbitrary function may exchange information, regardless of the
particular building service it performs. Trane has adopted a version of the BACnet protocol as
their standard protocol.
