Starting and Driving
Drive smoothly
Anticipating obstructions and slowing down well in
advance, avoids the need for unnecessary acceleration and
harsh braking. A smooth driving style not only reduces fuel
consumption, but can reduce the emission of poisonous
gases.
Avoid driving through waters or streams
Driving through waters or streams may have the electrical
systems of the car or the engine wetted and damaged
seriously.
Stop the engine when waiting in traffic
When it is obvious that the car will be stationary for several
minutes or more, and provided it is safe to do so, stop
the engine. The impact on the environment of starting
the engine again will be less than the effect of allowing the
engine to idle for 45 seconds or more.
Catalytic Converter
Exhaust temperatures can be extremely high,
do not park on ground where combustible
materials such as dry grass or leaves could
come into contact with the exhaust system
– in dry weather a fire could result.
The exhaust system incorporates a catalytic converter,
which converts poisonous exhaust emissions from the
engine into environmentally less harmful gases.
