•  Practise first.
•  Adapt your speed based on your ability. You should first practise rolling

forwards, making simple turns and braking techniques. You can then
advance to more difficult exercises. Go skateboarding where there is no
other traffic and avoid downhill slopes.

•  Try to find the best position for you, leaning slightly forwards. Never let

yourself by towed by a vehicle as this can cause serious accidents. Never
skateboard faster than you can run.

TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

•  When you try skateboarding for the first time, it is a good idea to have someone with you who

can help you out if you need it. Practise the most important techniques on grass or a mat
before moving on to a quicker surface such as asphalt or concrete.

•  Stand on the skateboard in a relaxed position with your knees slightly bent. Then let the

person helping you push you forwards so that you feel what it is like to skateboard.

•  When you feel at ease with your skateboard, you can start practising without any help. Try

pushing off on one foot before putting both feet on the skateboard. If there is no-one there to
help you, make sure the practice area is big enough.

•  Avoid putting other people at risk.
•  Always try leaning slightly forwards, never backwards.
•  When you feel a little more secure on your skateboard, you can increase your speed and

practise your skills.

•  Avoid slopes, uneven surfaces and roads with traffic. You can increase your speed as you feel

more secure.

•  Children under 8 years old should never go skateboarding alone, and should always be

supervised by an adult.

•  Jumping with a skateboard is always risky. Most skateboard accidents are caused by falls, so

it is good to practise falling and rolling away to reduce the risk of injury.

•  If you hop off your skateboard, make sure that you do not harm anyone else. A skilled

skateboarder always takes other people into consideration.
