SECTION 14: STARTING THE SYSTEM
Start w ith the main gas v al v e closed and the electric
po w er off.
14.1 Checkin g the Gas Line
1. Open the main v al v e and v erify that no gas is
flo w ing thro u gh the meter.
2. P u rge the line if this w as not done follo w ing
press u re testing w ith air.
3. Verify that the gas press u re is not abo v e
14'' w c (1/2 PSIG).
4. Close the main gas v al v e.
14.2 Checkin g the Electrical System
1. See that all temperat u re setpoints are set belo w
room temperat u re.
2. T u rn on po w er s u pply to system controls.
3. Check to see that no part of the system (i.e.
b u rners, p u mp or air s u pply blo w er) is po w ered.
4. Indi v id u ally check each zone by raising the zone
temperat u re set points separately. Raising each
zone temperat u re set point abo v e room
temperat u re sho u ld start the p u mp immediately.
After a 45 second delay, the b u rners w ill begin
their ignition seq u ence by sparking at the
electrode ( v isible thro u gh the b u rner w indo w ).
5. Vac uu m p u mp motors can be w ired to rotate the
impeller in either direction. A negati v e press u re
can still be meas u red w hen the impeller is r u n-
ning back w ards. Ens u re proper rotation of the
impeller prior to setting the v ac uu m press u re.
6. Make a preliminary v ac uu m check at b u rners in
branches that ha v e an adj u stable damper
co u pling. See Page 59, Figure 41 for manome-
ter hook u p to check v ac uu m. This check is to
ins u re that all dampers are open before the
system is fired. Vac uu m, as meas u red at the
end v ents, sho u ld be approximately 3.5'' w c or
slightly abo v e (cold).
14.3 Startin g the System
NOTE: D u ring the initial firing, the protecti v e oil on
the pipe may smoke for 30 to 60 min u tes and
adeq u ate v entilation sho u ld be pro v ided.
1. Start w ith all temperat u re setpoints belo w room
temperat u re.
2. Open main gas v al v e.
3. T u rn u p temperat u re setpoints one zone at a
time, w aiting to see that all b u rners in a zone
start. When the b u rner ignites, a bl u e flame w ill
be obser v ed thro u gh the v ie w er w indo w .
4. If any abnormal operation occ u rs, see the tro u -
bleshooting section of the ser v ice instr u ctions.

Allow heater to cool
before service.
Tubing may still be
hot after operation.

Leak test all compo-
nents of gas piping
before operation.
Gas can leak if piping
is not installed
properly.
Do not high pressure
test gas piping with
equipment connected.
DANGER
Electrical Shock Hazard
Disconnect electric
before service.
More than one
disconnect switch may
be required to
disconnect electric from
heater.
Heater must be
connected to a properly
grounded electrical
source.
Carbon Monoxide Hazard
Heaters installed
unvented must be
interlocked with sufficient
building exhaust.
Heaters must be installed
according to the
installation manual.
