B. Applying Patches
To apply patches, the following procedure must be followed:
1. Thoroughly prepare and clear the damaged area, as described in Section 3,
Preparation of Surfaces. Trim any frayed edges as necessary
2. Make a cross cut in the air chamber, if necessary to enable you to insert the
inner patch. Ensure the area to be repaired is thoroughly prepared for gluing
in accordance with the requirements in this Chapter,
inside the chamber and
outside.
3. Cut the inner patch so that it overlaps the area of damage by at least 3cm all
round. If the patch to be used is not circular, ensure the corners are rounded
off.
4. Prepare the patch for gluing in accordance with the requirements in this
Chapter.
5. Cut the outer patch so that it overlaps the area of damage by at least 1.25”
(3cm) all round. Prepare the patch for gluing as per the requirements in this
Chapter.
6. Apply the adhesive, according to the proceedure in the previous section,
to the inside of the air chamber to be repaired ensuring that the adhesive
extends a little beyond the area of the patch.
7. Apply the adhesive, according to the proceedure in the previous section, to
to the inner repair patch ensuring the outer edges of the patch have an even
layer of adhesive.
8. Once the three coats of adhesive have been reactivated until tacky, the inner
patch is ready to be applied.
9. Cover glued surface of the patch with a piece of polyethylene and insert it into
the air chamber.
10. Carefully align the patch under the damaged area, then remove and withdraw
the polyethylene.
