Only the adhesive specified in this manual ( FA 1030 adhesive and accelerator )
shall be used for repairs. Although other unspecified adhesives may apparently bond
surfaces together, they may also have unexpected negative side effects which will
eventually cause premature failure.
1. Keep the adhesive and curing agent in completely sealed airtight containers.
2. Adhesive must not be stored outside the temperature range 45°-85°F
(7°-29°C)
CAUTION:
PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT FA 1030
ADHESIVE, FA 1030 ACCELERATOR, AND MIXED UNCURED
ADHESIVE ARE NOT CONTAMINATED AS THIS COULD HAVE
DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON BOND STRENGTHS.
3. For each batch of adhesive, keep a sample and monitor it for development
of cure. Use the sample to join two pieces of fabric. Keep the joined fabric as
proof of the quality of the adhesive bond.
4. If the rubber fabric is chapped and aging, leaking or porous allowing diffusion
of air in large area, the liferaft shall be condemned rather than repaired.
3. Preparation of Surfaces
NOTE: Thoroughly clean surfaces with toluene to remove surface
contamination completely.
To prime the rubber surfaces correctly, apply the cleaner by aggres-
sively wiping with a cheesecloth of lint-free rag.
1. Apply the solvent with a clean lint-free fabric pad, wet but not dripping with
the solvent. Surfaces may need to be washed several times to remove all
contaminants.
2. Ensure that cleaning is done equally on all portions of the repair area. Before
applying adhesive, allow fabric to dry for at least 15 minutes.
