If the ends of the MT strip (20–30 mm from the strip ends) have transverse bends with
the radius of curvature less than 20 mm (Figure 7a), straighten them. To straighten the tape,
roll the tape into a tight tube of inverse curvature or slightly stretch it on an angular edge (for
example, on the table edge). The same is applied to the bent MT strip corners (Figure 7b).
In case the tape edges are failing to straighten up, cut them with the cutter from the SPRK.
Another kind of MT defect to be eliminated (Figure 7c) is dirty MT surface (greasy film,
water, solvents, chemical solutions, particles of dust/rust/ metal, etc.). MT surface should be
cleaned with alcohol using a special container from the SPRK (Figure 7d).
MT with considerable bends (breaks) (Figure 7e), breaks of edges (Figure 7f) and punctures
cannot be mended. Such tapes should not be used in case it is impossible to remove the
damaged fragment with the SPRK cutter.
As a result of being damaged and worn out, plastic MT loses particles of the working
layer. Consequently the quality of copying worsens and the MOV USB device becomes dirty.
If the defects of MT working layer are visible, the MT is to be withdrawn from use.
