Chapter 1

Introduction to Red Hat Directory Server

Red Hat Directory Server (Directory Server) product includes a Directory Server,

an Administration Server to manage multiple server instances, and Red Hat

Console to manage server instances through a graphical interface. This chapter

provides overview information about the Directory Server and the most basic

tasks you need to start administering a directory service.

Overview of Directory Server Management

The Directory Server is a robust, scalable server designed to manage an

enterprise-wide directory of users and resources. It is based on an open-systems

server protocol called the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). The

Directory Server runs as the

ns-slapd

process or service on your machine. The

server manages the directory databases and responds to client requests.
