The battery is
NOT
suitable for use as a power source for electric barges or e-boating if and when electric
outboards are used as a main propulsion. For this application we have specifically designed our AV product
line.
Guidelines for use
Discharging
Fully discharging your battery is not harmful. The battery is protected by an advanced integrated BMS (battery
management system). Charge the battery as soon as possible after a full discharge; due to low self-discharge
(~ 2% per month) voltage may drop below critical levels and damage the battery irreversibly. When the battery
is not in use turn off the power button off (if present) to prevent the battery being discharged by the charge
status indicator in standby mode. If the battery is not used for a longer period, we recommend charging to 50%
for optimum service life.
Charging
We recommend using a matching Rebelcell battery charger with a charging voltage of 16.8V. If you use a
different charger the warranty is void if damage occurs. Lead-acid battery chargers are not suitable to charge
your battery. Never use a battery charger with a charge voltage >16.8V or with a different charging profile than
CC/CV. These chargers can damage your battery! You can top-up or partly charge your battery whenever you
so desire, there is no so-called ‘memory effect’. The batteries cannot be charged at temperatures of 0°C and
lower. The maximum charge current should not be higher than 25A (12V50) or 40A (12V100). It is possible to
charge the battery with a solar panel. A suitable solar charge controller is required, more information can be
found on our website.
Battery charger (applicable only when you use a Rebelcell battery charger)
Read the warnings on the battery charger sticker before use and follow the instructions!
Step 1: connect the battery charger by connecting the red (+) and black (-) M8 tongue connector of the
battery charger to the M8 screw terminals of the battery.
Step 2: connect the power cord to the AC-outlet.
Step 3: set the power switch to "on" (if present) and the charging process will start.
The status of the charging process is indicated by the LED ‘s on the charger. Unplug the power cord before
disconnecting the charging cables from the battery. It takes 6-7 hours (with the 16.8V8A battery charger) to fully
charge a completely empty 12V50 battery. For the 12V100 this is 4-5 hours (with the 16.8V25A battery
charger).
Use with an e-motor / trolling engine
As the battery voltage remains nearly till the battery is nearly empty you will notice that thrust remains high and
constant. This will allow you to use your outboard in a lower gear and can significantly increase the runtime of
your e-motor. As the voltage is reduced gradually the battery capacity indicator on your e-motor is not reliable.
State of charge indicator
Your battery comes equipped with a digital state of charge indicator that can be found on top of your battery.
You can activate the indicator by softly pressing the ‘on’ button on the display. The indicator will go into
‘standby’ mode automatically after approximately 20s to conserve battery capacity. (Note: some of our battery
models have a display with a separate silver-colored power button that needs to be activated to turn the display
on. We recommend you leave it in the ‘off’ position when not using the battery to prevent discharge of the
battery through the state of charge indicator. The power button is only for the display: the battery also works
when the power button is off.)
BMS and safety
The Battery Management System (BMS) protects your battery and contributes towards a long service life.
Functions of the BMS are protection against deep discharge, overcharge, too high or too low temperatures,
high currents and cell balancing. When certain safety thresholds are exceeded the battery will shutdown as a
precaution and will turn itself on when the battery operates within specification. If this does not happen
automatically you need to disconnect your e-motor or other equipment in order to reset the battery. After a few
minutes you can reconnect your equipment. The activation of the BMS may seem like a failure, but it is not. If it
occurs repeatedly this can indicate a malfunction of a component in your electrical system or overheating of the
batteries. If this happens contact your installer to avoid injury.
