Self-Charging Battery Back-Up
Thespecial NiCad 7-cell 8.4vself-charging batteryrecharges continuouslyduringtrain
operation and should last for uptofiveyears. The battery is a dry battery thatshouldnot
leakorcauseanydamagetoyourengine.
If engine sounds seem distorted
or garbled at low voltages or become silentwhen power fromthetransformer isturned
off, test the batterytodeterminewhetheritshouldberechargedorreplaced.
Put the engineinneutralandleavethetrackvoltageat10-12volts(high
enough for the lights to shine brightly and the engine to move steadily) for 15
minutes.
If the sounds are improvedattheendofthe15-minutetestcharge,the
battery charge has run down and canberecharged. There are a number of ways you
can dothis:
Leave the engine in neutral withtrackvoltageat10-12voltsfor6-7hoursso
the battery can fully recharge (if your engine has a s moke unit, be sure it is
turned off).
Use M.T.H.'s battery recharger (sold separately) that plugs into a wall outletand
a special port under the engine to recharge the batteryovernight without leaving
it on the track.
If thesoundsarenotimprovedattheend of the 15-minute test charge, it is
timetoreplacethebatt
replacement arrives, but since alkaline batteries
cannot berecharged,itwilleventuallywear down.
Depending upon when your engine was
built, it may need to bechargedrightoutofthebox.
