1. After energising the motor for the first time, ensure that the starting current drops
below the nameplate current within 4 seconds, which means that the motor has run at
full speed. (If the motor is being started with a soft starter or an automatic transformer,
the starting time should be less than 4 seconds).
2. Check the pump flow and pressure to ensure that the motor is running in the correct
direction of rotation. Changing two of the three-phase power cables may change the
direction of rotation.
3. While the motor is running for the first time check water for sand. If sand appears,
continue pumping until the water disappears. If the motor is turned off while the pump is
still pumping sand, this could build up in the pump and cause it to seize.
4. During the check or rotation check, it is necessary to monitor the number of starts and
the time between starts. As a general rule, the motor should have 15 minutes to cool
down between starts.
5. It is strongly recommended that the “Overcurrent” protection is set to decelerate to
approximately 5% higher than the steady state current recorded when the motor/pump
is started. It is not recommended that the “Over Current” protection is set just above the
full load nameplate current as, in many cases, this will not protect the motor if the current
increases, especially if the motor is not fully loaded. We believe that the operator needs
to know if the current starts to rise, so that they can determine the cause.
6. All temperatures and all 3 phase voltage and current and insulation levels should be
recorded during the life of the installation and monitored and checked as a form of pre-
ventative maintenance.
COMMISSIONING AND OPERATION
will lead to a large reduction in starting torque).
* The timers are set to ensure that the motor has sufficient voltage for long enough to run
the motor as quickly as possible and also to bring the motor up to maximum voltage as
quickly as possible as prolonged operation at reduced voltage will cause the motor win-
dings to be damaged.
* Thrust bearings in submersible motors will not operate properly at low rotational speeds.
It is very important that the motor reaches at least 100% of rated speed to allow the thrust
bearing to start working properly. This is especially a potential problem for motors being
started with soft starters or operating on VWF drives.
