Before the measurement
Before you carry out a blood pressure measurement you should remain entirely calm for 5 - 10
minutes, not eat, not drink any alcohol, not smoke, not do any sport and not bathe. All of these
factors influence the measurement result. Remove items of clothing that are tight on your upper
arm. Always measure on the same arm (normally left). Carry out the measurement regularly at
the same time of day, because blood pressure changes during the day.
Factors that can lead to incorrect measurements
Everything that supports the arm during measurement can increase the blood pressure.
Make sure that you are in a comfortable position and do not move your arm during the
measurement. If necessary, you can place a cushion under the arm to be measured. If the
arm artery is lower or higher than the heart this will lead to an incorrect measurement result.
Note:
Only use manufacturer-approved and clinically approved cuffs.
A loose cuff or a defective cuff with an exposed bladder leads to wrong measured values.
In the event of repeated measurements, blood is accumulated in the arm arteries which
may result in wrong measured values. Consecutive blood pressure measurements should be
repeated after a waiting period of 1 minute at the earliest. Otherwise, this may lead to
ecchymoses (bleeding into the skin). It is important to hold the arm upwards in order to ensure
that the accumulated blood can drain.
Putting on the arm cuff
1.
Place the arm cuff flat on a table with the hook and loop side facing
down. Pass the end of the arm cuff through the metal loop so that a
circle is formed. The hook and loop fastener is now visible from the
outside.
2. Push the arm cuff over the left upper arm so that the tube lies in the
direction of the lower arm.
3. Push the arm cuff over the arm as shown. Make sure that the lower
edge of the arm cuff lies about 2 to 3 cm above the elbow and the
rubber tube of the arm cuff lies on the inner side of the arm.
4. Pull on the free end of the arm cuff and close the arm cuff using the
hook and loop fastener.
5. The arm cuff should now be tight on your upper arm, so that 2 fin-
gers fit between the arm cuff and upper arm. Each item of clothing
that is tight on the arm must be removed.
6. Fasten the arm cuff with the hook and loop fastener in such a way
that it fits comfortably and not too tightly. Lay your arm on a table
(palm upward), so that the arm cuff is at the same height as the
heart. Make sure that the tube is not kinked.
