Maintenance
• Inspect the cable at the beginning of every heating season and monthly during operation. Check for evidence of cutting, tearing or
other signs of wear.
• Checks should also be done after any maintenance has been performed.
• Check the heating cable to verify that the insulation is not wet. Wet sections of pipe can result in cold spots or frozen sections. If the
insulation is damp or wet, it should be replaced.
• Turn off or disconnect the power when the heating season ends. Reconnect before the next heating season.
Warning:
Disconnect the power connection before inspecting or performing any maintenance.

Problem
Circuit Breaker Trips
Icing Problems Persist
Probable Cause
Circuit is undersized
Defective circuit breaker
Internal or external damage to
the cable causing a short.
Pattern not laid out correctly
Loss of power
Damaged Bi-Metallic
thermostat
External heat source
Solution
Have a licensed electrician install new circuit breaker with an appropriate
current (amp) rating.
Unplug the cable and check for cuts, if no cuts exist on the exterior, there
may be cuts on the inside. If all other solutions have been checked and the
cable is still tripping the circuit breaker. Dispose of the cable and purchase
a new cable to protect the pipe.
Look for areas that deviate from the installation instructions and change
accordingly.
Check the PRIMELIGHT
®
Indicator Light, if the light is still on, the cable is
still receiving power.
If the thermostat is damaged, the unit must be replaced. To test the
thermostat, first check that power is being supplied to the cord and that
the cord is not overlapping itself. Wrap an ice pack around the thermostat
while it is installed on the pipe. After a few minutes the cable should be
warm to the touch. If the cable does not respond to the ice pack it is
defective and needs to be replaced.
Be sure to prevent external heat sources from coming in contact or being in
close proximity with the cable. If an external heat source is close to the
thermostat, it may prevent the thermostat from registering sub 40°F/4°C
temperatures, preventing it from turning on the heated portion of the cable.
