To control the speed of the turbine, you can use a closed-loop or
open-loop configuration. In an open-loop configuration, the RA-16 rotary
atomizer uses two separate air regulators: one when the turbine is in an
idle condition (coating material is not being sprayed) and the other when
the turbine is in a loaded condition (coating material is being sprayed).
In a closed-loop configuration,

the operator sets the turbine speed with a Programmable Logic
Controller (PLC)
S
an internal feedback loop controls the desired speed. This occurs
even if the RA-16 rotary atomizer is not spraying coating material
In an open-loop configuration, the
S
operator sets the desired speed range by using the manual air
regulators located in the pneumatic panel
S
speed sensor senses the turbine speed
The RA-16 rotary atomizer receives pneumatic, electrostatic, and fluid
inputs. (The Installation section in this manual describes how to install
these inputs.) A brief explanation of each input follows.
The RA-16 rotary atomizer receives pneumatic inputs from the following:

turbine supply air
S
bearing air
S
brake air
S
vector air
Turbine Supply Air
The turbine supply air causes the turbine shaft to rotate in a
counterclockwise direction as viewed from the front of the turbine.
Shutting off the turbine supply air will cause the turbine to coast to a stop.
