6. Starting-up
The starting-up of the unit consists of running a first regeneration cycle, during which the
columns of resins and brine tank will be filled of water, all automatic features will be checked
and the unit will be prepared to start the service.
During the starting-up is not required that salt is available inside the brine tank.
At the end of the first regeneration, put the salt into the brine tank (it can also be completely
filled). Take care not to put salt inside the protection pipe.
See § 7 page 12 for recommended quality of salt to be used.
To start-up the unit, proceed as follows :
•
Be sure that the control panel is switched OFF.
•
Open the by-pass valve, keeping closed the shut-off valves upstream and downstream of the
system.
•
Close only partially the gate valve on backwash drain line.
•
Turn clockwise the cam shaft located on the back of the programmer, until the first piston is
pressed. The second piston must not be pressed (BACKWASH).
•
Open slowly and not completely the inlet valve. Water will enter from the bottom of one of the
column as air will be expelled from the top to the drain.
•
When only water will come out from the drain, open completely the inlet valve and open
slowly and gradually the backwash gate valve. The flow rate must be the highest allowable
without any leakage of resins through the drain line; so adjust the gate valve accordingly.
•
When the proper flow rate of backwash has been stated, adjust the gate valve definitely.
•
The backwashing phase must run until the water coming out the drain is perfectly clear.
•
Using a pail, add water in the brine tank, until the water mark is approx. 30 cm (12 inches)
from the bottom (this is required for the initial regeneration only and is automatically filled
thereafter).
•
Turn again clockwise the cam shaft, until both pistons are pressed (BRINE DRAWING AND
RINSE). Check that some water flows to the drain line, while, in the same time, the water
flows from the brine tank to the unit. Check the water mark diminution in the brine tank
(BRINE DRAWING).
•
Turn again clockwise the cam shaft, until only the second piston is pressed. The first piston
must not be pressed (FAST RINSE). The water flows to the drain line; allow the water flowing
until the drain water looks perfectly clear. In the same time the water flows to the brine tank,
too, in order to prepare the brine for the following regeneration cycle. The water level inside
the brine tank is automatically adjusted according to the float valve.
•
Turn clockwise the cam shaft, until both pistons are released and not pressed (SERVICE).
The 3
rd
piston, available only for some kind of programmers, is used only to control
hydraulically the working of the inlet and outlet diaphragm valves of the column (if available); it
must be ignored.
•
Switch ON the control panel.
•
open the outlet valve and close the by-pass valve
•
Put the salt into the brine tank (it can also be completely filled). Take care not to put salt
inside the protection pipe.
Starting now the unit is on service and feeds treated water.
