6.2 Establishing a Direct Serial Connection
To use the Web interface of a Trillium Compact through a direct serial connection to a
computer
1. Use a serial communications breakout cable (Nanometrics part number 16978-3M) to
connect the serial port of a computer to the Trillium Compact connector.
2. Start the SLIP connection (see Section 6.2.1 “Creating a SLIP Connection on a Windows
XP Computer” and Section 6.2.2 “Creating a SLIP Connection on a Windows 7
Computer” for instructions on creating the SLIP connection).
a) In Control Panel, select Network Connections .
b) Right-click on the SLIP connection for the Trillium Compact and select Connect .
A brief handshake will take place before establishing the connection. The Windows
operating system will not establish the connection unless the handshake is
successful.
3. Go to the URL of the unit’s Home page in a Web browser (which is the IP address of the
unit).
• Open a Web browser on the same computer the Trillium Compact is connected to
and go to
http://2.23.x.y
(the IP address of the unit) to access the home page.
6.2.1 Creating a SLIP Connection on a Windows XP Computer
Use the following steps to configure a SLIP port on a Windows XP computer:
1. In Control Panel, select Network Connections.
2. Click File > New Connection to open the New Connection Wizard.
3. Click Next .
4. Click Set up an advanced connection and click Next .
5. Click Connect directly to another computer and click Next .
6. Click Guest and click Next .
7. Enter a name for the connection and click Next .
For example, if the IP address of the Trillium Compact is 2.23.1.200, then the URL to access the
home page of the instrument is http://2.23.1.200.
The IP address of the unit is provided on the label of your Trillium Compact. If you cannot find
the IP address, see Section 6.4 “Calculating the IP Address” on page 36 for information on
determining the full IP address of the unit.
You only need to create one SLIP connection per computer for multiple Trillium Compact
units, assuming the computer’s serial port has not been used for another purpose in the
interim. To use the SLIP connection with multiple units, simply disconnect the serial connector
from one unit, move it to the next unit, and go to the IP address of the new unit in your Web
