3. When the log is supported on both ends (Fig.
43), cut 1/3 the diameter from the top (overbuck).
Then make the finished cut by underbucking the
lower 2/3 to meet the first cut.
4. When bucking on a slope always stand on
the uphill side of the log (Fig. 44). When “cutting
through”, to maintain complete control release
the cutting pressure near the end of the cut
without relaxing your grip on the product
handles. Don’t let the chain contact the ground.
After completing the cut, wait for the saw chain
to stop before you move the product. Always
stop the engine before moving from tree to tree.
5. Support small logs on a sawing stand or
another log while bucking (Fig. 45).
6. If the wood diameter is large enough for you
to insert a soft bucking wedge without touching
the chain, you should use the wedge to hold the
cut open to prevent pinching (Fig. 46).
Working with tree service chain saws
from rope and harness
WARNING! The following
operation may only be performed
by professionally trained and
experienced operators! The
instructions present only a basic
overview of rules and precautions
to be observed when using the
product as a train/service chain
saw! They may therefore not be
used as solely training material or
displacement of an official training
course!
Overview
The following instructions set out working
practices aimed at reducing the risk of injury
from tree service chain saws when working at
height from a rope and harness. While it may
form the basis of guidance and training literature,
it should not be regarded as a substitute for
formal training. The given instructions are only an
example of best working practice. National laws
and regulations should always be followed.
The following instructions include
• general requirements that should be met before
using a tree service chain saw for work at height
from a rope and harness,
• preparations for using a tree service chain saw
from a rope and harness, and
• use of a tree service chain saw for pruning and
dismantling, including secure work positioning
for two-handed use, starting the chain saw,
cutting with the chain saw, restrictions on one-
handed use and freeing a trapped saw.
These instructions do not deal with techniques
to control sections of branches and stems cut by
the saw.
General requirements
Never work alone when operating this product
at height from a rope and harness. Have a
ground worker trained in appropriate emergency
procedures to assist you.
Only use this product for tree service when
you are trained in general safe climbing and
work positioning techniques and are properly
equipped with harnesses, ropes, strops,
carabiners and other equipment for maintaining
secure and safe working positions for both
yourself and the product.
Preparing to use the saw in the tree
The chain saw should be checked, fuelled, started
and warmed up by the ground worker and then
switched off before it is sent up to the operator in
the tree.
The chain saw should be fitted with a suitable
strop for attachment to the operator’s harness
(Fig. 47):
