INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing a SMART CLOCK or SMART CLOCK av Digital Audio
& Video Sync Master Clock Generator from MUTEC GmbH.
Please keep this manual for future reference, as it also contains the
functional description of the optional Video Expansion (P/NVSG-01) for the
SMART CLOCK!
General Function Description
The SMART CLOCK and SMART CLOCK av generate different clock signals
for the synchronization of digital audio devices such as hard-disk recorders,
audio workstations, digital mixing consoles, AD/DA converters, musical
instruments and sound cards. Simultaneous use of Word Clock, Word
Clock x 256, PAL/NTSC video, AES/EBU and S/PDIF clock signals enables each
device in the recording studio to be individually synchronized. In addition,
different Word Clock rates can be simultaneously output on the basis of
common clock frequencies. Thus, new devices with higher clock rates may
be integrated into an existing studio set-up without difficulty. It is also
possible to supply various workstations in the same room with different
clock rates.
The SMART CLOCKs offer nine different audio-related Word Clock
frequencies ranging from 32.0kHz to 192.0kHz, which are then
independently distributed to eight clock outputs with multipliers x1, x2
and x4. For the synchronization of ProTools systems, six Word Clock
frequencies from 32.0kHz to 96.0kHz can be transferred as Word Clock x256
(also called Super Clock).
The video reference generator (standard with SMART CLOCK av, optional
with SMART CLOCK) produces PAL or NTSC video sync-signals such as black
+ burst or composite sync. All the usual pull-up and pull-down frequencies
can be produced for film-to-video transfer (SMART CLOCK av only).
The design advantage of the SMART CLOCK is its high-precision frequency
generator, from which all clock signals are simultaneously derived. As a
result, the individual clock signals generated are synchronized to each other
in phase, and hence feature the same frequency accuracy and time base!
The frequency generation is accurate to < ± 1ppm and thus complies with
AES 11, Grade 1 as well as broadcast specifications.
For larger equipment set-ups, which require more clock outputs than are
provided by the SMART CLOCK/ -av, MUTEC offers a complementary Word
Clock signal distributor (DISTRIBUTOR ws) and an AES/EBU signal distributor
(DISTRIBUTOR ae). To provide a delay-compensated feed signal for these
distributors, each Word Clock and AES/EBU output on the SMART CLOCK/
-av can be set to transmit the internal SMART BUS signal. Thus, the signals
delivered by the SMART CLOCK and by the distributors are phase-synchro-
nized and time-coherent (!), even though the devices are wired in series.
Features
Generation of nine Word Clock frequencies ranging from
32.0kHz to 192.0kHz.
Basic clocks can be output with factors x1, x2, x4 and x256.
Simultaneous output of different clock rates.
Frequency accuracy in compliance with AES11, Grade 1.
Output signals contain extremely low jitter.
Generation of PAL or NTSC video signals (optional for SMART CLOCK
with P/NVSG-01 Module).
Output of PAL/NTSC video signals as composite sync or black + burst
(optional for SMART CLOCK with P/NVSG-01 Module).
Generates all so-called pull-up and pull-down frequencies for film-to-
video transfer: +0.1%, -0.1%, +4.166%, -4.0% (only for SMART CLOCK av).
Phase-synchronized generation of S/PDIF and AES/EBU blank frames.
Delay-compensated feed signals from MUTECs DISTRIBUTOR ws and
DISTRIBUTOR ae.
Frequency selection is retained after power-down.
