Histogram Analysis
The histogram is the tool of choice to troubleshoot the link. You can think of it as a
scope built into the receiver and it works even if you do not have pattern lock. For both
NRZ and PAM signals, the histogram graph is shown as follows:

The thinner the peaks the better the performance of the PAM signal and the less
the jitter. These peaks can be enhanced using the pre/post-emphasis available.
