Throttle/Choke Cont.
Part 2: Choke (VEN22 Only)
As VEN22 is equipped with a non-fuel injected engine, it’s fitted with a choke cable. This manually changes the air/
fuel mixture to help start the engine. There is no need to adjust the cable unless it has been removed from the
engine.
Signs of Improper Adjustment
• Engine struggles to run, or does not start up at all.
• Engine exhausts black smoke while at normal operating temperatures.
Choke Inspection
It should move freely without pinching or binding. Look on the engine side of the cable, no fraying is acceptable (J
in Figure-12). See engine owner’s manual for detailed information on the choke brackets. Each piece is to be free of
any debris or damage. The cable clamp “K” should be tight, but overly tight which prevents the cable from moving.
On the cable barrel there is a set screw “I”. It should be firmly tight.

Choke Adjustment
1. Ensure the choke cable is pushed completely against the dash (Figure-13).
2. Now go to the engine. Slide the cable through the engine mounting clamp (I in Figure-12), but do not tighten it
yet.
3. The very end of the cable is solid metal. It should be pushed into the barrel on the engine (K in Figure-12). Firmly
tighten the set screw approximately halfway across the solid metal.
Note:
Do not overtighten and bend the
cable.
4. The goal is to remove any slack in the cable, then clamp it down. Slowly pull it away from the barrel on the
engine as described in step #3. Once the cable begins to pull the barrel, let off until it goes back to its resting
position. Tighten down the clamp.
Note:
Do not overtighten to the point where it pinches the cable. Only clamp
the outside coating of the cable. If it is not directly under the clamp, adjust the cable at the barrel from step #3
then repeat this step.
5. At the dash, pull the choke cable out. Go back to the engine and look at the barrel “K” position. It should be pulled
close to “I” in Figure-12.
A. If it is: You are finished.
B. If it is not: Repeat
Choke Inspection
and
Choke Adjustment.
