never
move the charger when it is in operation.
•
do not
use the charger in damaged condition, or with a damaged
power cable or plug. If it is necessary to replace the power cable,
please contact our Customer Services department.
• if the charger is not functioning correctly, first record the observed
fault and note down the type plate details (important: serial number
and charger designation). Then remove the plug from the socket
before calling Customer Services.
• never disassemble and/or repair the charger yourself. Only our
Customer Services team can ensure a reliable and safe repair.
•
failure to observe these safety instructions and the
operating instructions may lead to faults, material
damage or personal injury. In addition, any claim under
warranty will be void.
4. Setting up the charger
In setting up the battery charger, adequate ventilation should be provi-
ded through at least 5 cm clearance to right and left of the unit. The
underside and/or the intake orifices of the fan on the underside must
not be covered. The metal casing of the charger is suitable for floor
mounting or for fitting to a brick or stone wall (installation kit may be
ordered from HOPPECKE). For use in dusty environments, wall moun-
ting is necessary, to avoid excessive dust from being sucked into the
charger. In extremely dusty conditions, the charger may be used only
with the
dust filter option.
Never stack chargers on top of one anot-
her, nor place objects on top of the charger.
5. Connection requirements
5.1 Connection to the single-phase mains power
supply 230 V 1~
The single-phase chargers are suitable for a mains voltage of 230 V,
50/60 Hz, single-phase, and are provided with a 2.5 metre long
cable with safety plug.
Important safety warning:
The mains plug must be connected to
an
earthed socket.
This charger is able to compensate for voltage
differences of ±10%.
5.2 Connection to the 3-phase mains power supply 400 V 3~
The 3-phase chargers are suitable for a mains voltage of 400 V,
50/60 Hz, 3-phase. They are provided with a 2.5 metre long,
5 strand power cable (L1, L2, L3, N, earth) and standard CEE plug.
Important safety warning:
The mains plug must be connected to
an
earthed socket.
This charger is able to compensate for voltage
differences of ±10%.
5.3 Connection of the charging cable to the battery
The chargers are provided at the outlet (plus-minus battery connection)
with 3 metre long charging cables marked red (+) and black (-). In
respect of length and cross-section, compensation is made for voltage
losses through the charging electronics software. In the event of repla-
cement, or any changes to cross-section or length, the compensation
must be adjusted by HOPPECKE Customer Services, to avoid any con-
sequential damage to the battery. The charging cable may be supplied
complete with charging plug.
WARNING:
Battery voltage must conform to the voltage for which the
charger is designed.
6. Bringing the charger into operation
The charger may now be connected. Please insert the mains plug into
the socket quickly, since charging up of the input capacitors leads to
crackling noises. To prevent risk of fire, the plug must be inserted com-
pletely. The charger is now ready for operation and indicates standby
status by the blue LED or the blue background light of the LCD display.
The charger has
reverse polarity protection.
Nevertheless, please
make a point of checking the positive and negative polarity when
connecting. Always make sure that the plug connector is fully contac-
ted, to avoid damage from excessive heat.
If a fixed plug connection is not used, please note the following points:
Connect the positive cable to the positive terminal, and the negative
cable to the negative terminal.
The charger is activated automatically on a random basis between 3
and 10 seconds. To utilise off-peak power, a delayed start of charging
of up to 10 hours may be programmed. In this connection, please note
the total charging time of the battery ( 5 h, 6 h, 8 h, 12 h).
The charging process has begun.
WARNING!
If it is necessary to disconnect the battery before char-
ging is completed:
Disconnection when current is flowing can
lead to explosion, if it occurs within the distance (EN
50272-3) of 50 cm from the charged battery.
It is therefore
absolutely essential that the
STOP button
is actuated first, to prevent
arcing (welding with damage to the plug). This interrupts charging for
35 seconds, during which the battery must be removed, or charging
will restart.
7. The mode of operation of the charger
LED
Standby:
The power LED line is blue. Ready to charge the
battery.
Chargin process: After the charger has contacted, it starts to charge
the battery after 3 - 10 seconds, as determined by
the random generator. The power LED line shows
yellow.
Charging ended: Automatic termination of the charging process by the
charger. Total charging time is shown in the centre of
the display. The power LED line shows green.
STOP:
Charging may be interrupted at any time by pressing
the STOP button. Never disconnect the battery
without first pressing the STOP button – risk of
explosion and damage to charging plug.
Fault:
The power LED line shows red: battery fault (see fault
codes).
The power LED line flashes red: charger fault.
