REMOVABLE MEDIA DRIVE UPGRADES
This chapter describes how to add a removable-media
drive, such as a tape drive, to your computer. The
drive is assumed to be of 5.25-inch form factor.
The forward drive bay of your computer can
accommodate up to two removable-media drives. A
CD-ROM drive is fitted as standard in Apricot MS
models, occupying the topmost slot in the drive bay.
Removable-media drives are typically either ATA
devices which can use the secondary E-IDE connector
on the motherboard, or SCSI devices which require a
separate SCSI host bus adapter expansion card.
The secondary E-IDE connector can accommodate
up to two devices “daisy-chained” in series. A SCSI
host adapter can usually accommodate several devices
in series.
Warning
Never carry out any work inside the computer with AC
power applied. Always shut down the computer and
unplug all power cords before removing the top cover.
Configuring the drive
Removable-media drives sometimes require
configuration, perhaps by altering jumpers on the
drive itself, prior to installation. Configuration details
vary from drive to drive: a second ATA drive needs to
be configured as a slave drive, and a SCSI drive
requires that its device ID number be set.
Most drives are supplied with documentation
describing how to configure the drive. If you are
uncertain about configuring the drive consult your
supplier.
