Engine oil consumption can only be

determined after a certain mileage has

been covered.  During the break-in
period,  higher oil consumption may be
noticed and  is  normal.

Econom ical  D riving  Indicator

(ECONOMY)

The indicator shows the fuel consump

tion tendency during various driving
modes.

High fuel consumption is indicated if

the pointer moves into the red area;

economical driving is indicated when it
is in the black area. The indications
should only be compared within the
same gear.

Do not compare fuel consumption
readings between different gears. The

following rule applies: If you drive at
equal speeds, the fuel consumption is

lower in the higher gear, although in

this gear the pointer is more frequently

in the  red area.

Engine  Oil Consumption

Should the charge indicator lamp fail to

come on prior to starting when the key

is in steering lock position 2 or should it

fail to go out after starting or during

operation, this indicates a fault which
must be repaired at an authorized
MERCEDES-BENZ dealer as soon as
possible.

When the charging indicator lamp
glows while the engine is running, the
V-belt may have been broken (which
also makes the water pump inopera
tive). This may cause overheating and
damage to the engine. In this case the
V-belt must be replaced at once.

Deceleration Shutoff

The fuel injection process is interrupted

only during deceleration, if the driver’s

foot is fully removed from the gas

pedal.

Charge Indicator Lamp

The oil pressure at idle speed may
drop to 0.3 bar (4.4 psi) if the engine is

at operating temperature. This will not
jeopardize its operational  reliability.

Pressure must, however,  rise immedi
ately  upon  acceleration.

Engine Oil Temperature Indicator

The normal engine oil operating
temperature range is between 80° C to

120° C (176° F to 248° F).

The engine oil temperature may, under

certain conditions,  rise to 150° C

(302° F) maximum. If this temperature

is exceeded, we recommend that you
check the oil level.  It should not be
above the upper mark (max) on the
dipstick.
