Loss of pulse signal can occur in any of the following situations:
• Placement of a probe on an extremity with a blood pressure cuff, arterial catheter, or
intravascular line.
• The patient has hypotension, severe vasoconstriction, severe anemia, or hypothermia
• There is arterial occlusion proximal to the probe
• The patient is in cardiac arrest or shock
• The probe is too tight
• There is excessive illumination from light sources such as a surgical lamp, a bilirubin
lamp, or sunlight
• A blood pressure cuff is in

ated on the same extremity as the one to which an SpO
2
probe is attached
Note: SpO
2
probe should be kept from the light source, e.g. radial lamp or infrared lamp.
