5 Non-intended use
The fan unit must not be used in the following
situations under any circumstances. There is a
risk of death. Read all the safety instructions.
EX
EXPLOSION HAZARD
!
Explosion hazard due to ignition of ex-
plosive substances if operating with no PTC
thermistor triggering device or an unauthor-
ised device.
Only operate fan with an extra PTC
thermistor triggering device in accordance with
Directive 2014/34/EU (
Chap. 6).
!
Explosion hazardfrom operating several
fans in parallel with one single PTC thermis-
tor triggering device. Reliable tripping is not
always guaranteed in the event of a fault.
Do not under any circumstances operate several
fans in parallel with one single PTC thermistor
triggering device.
!
Explosion hazard due to spark formation
by the impeller scraping on the housing if the
air gap is too small.
Ensure a large enough air
gap all the way round between the impeller and
housing.
!
Explosion hazard when moving explosive
dusts or solid/liquid particles (e.g. dye), which
may stick to the fan
.
Do not under any circum-
stances use fan to move explosive dusts or solid/
liquid particles.
!
Explosion hazard when operating outside
the ambient and operating conditions, espe
-
cially due to overheating when operatingout-
side the permitted usage temperature.
Only operate fan within the permitted ambient
and operating conditions and permitted usage
temperature.
!
Explosion hazard when operating without
protective device should foreign bodies fall
or be drawn into the air channel
Risk of
death due to spark formation.
Be sure to fit a
protective device according to EN 60529, e.g.
MAICO protective grille SG... on an uncovered air
inlet/outlet. (IP 20 degree of protection). Protection
against reaching in (protective grille in accordance
with EN 13857) is required on both sides.
!
Explosion hazard if the explosive atmos-
phere cannot be removed if the supply air in-
take is insufficient
. This can arise if e.g. rooms
are too air-tight or room filters are clogged.
Ensure sufficient supply air intake. Operate fan in
permissible air power range.
!
Explosion hazard when operating with
frequency converter for speed control. Bearing
currents may be a direct source of ignition.
Operation with frequency converter not permitted.
!
Explosion hazard due to unauthorised
conversions on unit, incorrect mounting or
damaged components. Danger if installation/
modification work is carried out by unqualified
staff.
Operation not permitted if unit is modi-
fied, mounting is incorrect or components are
damaged. Unit is not approved if mounting work is
carried out by unqualified staff.
!
CAUTION
Danger of injury if there is no protection
against reaching in/contact (protective grille)
on
uncovered air inlet/outlet, especially
if peo-
ple can access the fan.
Fan may only be operated with
protection against
reaching in
on both sides
. Areas with potential
access to rotating parts (impeller) should be made
safe with protection against reaching in in accord-
ance with EN ISO 13857, e.g. MAICO protective
grille SG.. (satisfies IP 20 degree of protection in
accordance with EN 60529).
6 PTC thermistor triggering device needed
PTC thermistor triggering devices which meet the
following conditions are permitted, otherwise the
conformity ceases to apply:
●
Type-examination in accordance with Directive
2014/34/EU.
● Identification in accordance with Directive at least
II (2) G.
The PTC thermistor triggering device must be matched
to the PTC thermistor inserted in the winding in
accordance with DIN 44082 (
see rating plate).
Tripping must occur:
●
in the time stated on the rating plate t
A
.
●
in the event of excess temperatures on the PTC
thermistors, i.e. in the stator winding of the con-
nected motor.
●
after a short-circuit in the PTC thermistor circuit.
●
after a wire break in the PTC thermistor circuit.
●
after the supply voltage fails in all three external
conductors.
Once all causes of faults have been eliminated, the
connected motor must not start up again automat-
ically. It may only be switched on again manually
(switch-on inhibit).
For optimum protection, we recommend the MAICO
MVS 6 PTC thermistor triggering device type ex-
amined in accordance with Directive 2014/34/EU –
please note the MVS 6 operating instructions.
7 Duties of the installer and the operating
company
The fan may only be operated at permissible ambi-
ent and airstream temperatures of -20 to +40 °C and
only if fully mounted. The fan should be regularly
checked and maintained by an electrician trained in
explosion protection
Chapter 19.
Cleaning and maintenance intervals should be
determined by the operator in accordance with
EN 60079-17 – frequency depends on ambient
conditions and anticipated limitations. Shorten
the maintenance intervals in the event of dust or
a corrosive atmosphere.
Additional
safety require-
ments
should be observed
during mounting and
operation, e.g. in accordance with
●
EU Directive 1999/92/EC, ATEX 137: implement-
ed in Germany with the Ordinance on Industrial
Safety and Health.
●
EN 60079-14: Design, selection and erection of
electrical installations.
●
the national accident prevention requirements.
8 Safety instructions for users
!
DANGER
Explosion hazard due to spark formation if
foreign bodies are inserted into the unit.
Do not
insert any objects in the unit.
!
CAUTION
Danger of injury due to rotating impeller and
suction. Hair
, clothing, jewellery etc. may be
pulled into the fan if you get too close to it.
During operation always keep far enough away to
prevent this from happening.
!
CAUTION
Risks for people (including children) with
reduced physical, sensory or mental capabili
-
ties or a lack of knowledge.
The fan may not be
used or cleaned by children or people with reduced
capabilities.
!
CAUTION
Hot motor surfaces may result in skin burns if
touched.
Do not touch hot motor surfaces. Always
wait until the motor has cooled down.
9 Switching unit on / off
The fan is switched on or off with an optional switch.
To regulate the air power, the unit can also be
connected with an optional 5-step transformer (e.g.
MAICO TR..) – (DZ. 35/2 B Ex e is the exception to
this).
The fan is designed for continuous operation (S1).
Frequently switching on/off may result in improper
heating and should be avoided.
10 Reversing mode
Standard models can be switched between extrac-
tion and ventilation. In reversing mode (opposite
air flow direction), the volumetric flow is reduced by
around 35 %.
NOTICE
Thermal properties of fan designed for continuous
operation. If the direction of rotation is changed
frequently or the fan is switched on and off a lot, the
motor may heat up too much.
11
Action to take in the event of a fault
Check whether the PTC thermistor triggering device
has responded. Unplug the fan from the mains at
all poles in the event of operational disturbances.
Before switching on again, have trained specialists
perform troubleshooting and remedy faults found.
This applies in particular after the PTC thermistor
triggering device has tripped. If faults reoccur, send
the unit to our factory for repairs.
Mounting of unit by electrician trained
in explosion protection
12 Safety instructions
Under no circumstances use the unit for purpos-
es other than those for which it was intended
Chapter 5.
!
DANGER
!
Danger from electric shock.
Whenever work-
ing on the fan, release the supply current circuits,
secure to prevent them from switching on again
and ensure the unit is de-energised. Attach warning
sign in clearly visible place. Ensure that there is no
explosive atmosphere.
!
Explosion hazard. Degree of protection is
not ensured if the cables are incorrectly insert-
ed into the terminal box.
Ensure degree of protection by correctly inserting
the cables into the terminal box.
!
Explosion hazard when operating with unit
not fully mounted and if air inlet/outlet is not
correctly protected.
The fan may only be operated if the unit is fully
mounted and with the protective devices (EN 60529)
for the air channel fitted. Ensure that foreign bod
-
ies cannot be sucked into the unit and ducts.
!
Explosion hazard/danger of injury from an
incorrectly mounted fan or a falling fan (unit
has a high inherent weight).
Only mount on walls/ceilings with sufficient
load-bearing capacity and sufficiently dimensioned
mounting material. Mounting material is to be
supplied by the customer. During installation, do
not allow people to stand under the installation
location.
!
Explosion hazard due to incorrect adjust-
ment.
The rotating fan parts were adjusted in the
manufacturer's factory. The unit must not therefore
be taken apart. The temporary removal of the ter-
minal box cover during unit installation is the only
exception to this restriction.
