Series Connection
(four 6 VDC batteries to create a 24 VDC bank)
A s e r i e s c o n n e c t i o n c o m b i n e s o v e r a l l b a t t e r y v o l t a g e b y t h e n u m b e r o f b a t t e r i e s in
the string. Even though there are multiple batteries, the capacity remains the same. In the example at the
left (Figure 8), four 6 VDC, 100 AHr batteries are comb i n e d i n t o a s i n g l e s t r i n g r e s u l t i n g i n a 2 4
V D C , 2 0 0 A H r b a n k .
Connect the negative battery terminal of one battery to the positive of t he other using a short cable.
C o n n e c t t h e n e g a t i v e b a t t e r y c a b l e ( B L A C K ) f r o m t h e i n v e r t e r t o t h e o p e n n e g a tive
terminal of one of the batteries. At the same time, connect a DC ground cable b e t w e e n t h e n e g a t i v e
t e r m i n a l a n d t h e v e h i c l e ’ s D C g r o u n d i n g b u s .
C o n n e c t t h e p o s i t i v e b a t t e r y c a b l e ( R E D ) f r o m t h e i n v e r t e r t o t h e p o s i t i v e t e r m i nal of
the opposite battery.
N O T E : A f u s e m u s t b e p l a c e d b e t w e e n t h e p o s i t i v e t e r m i n a l a n d t h e p o s i t i v e ( R E D )
b a t t e r y c a b l e t o t h e i n v e r t e r .
Once the batteries are completely wired and tested, coat the terminals with an a p p r o v e d a n t i-
o x i d i z i n g s p r a y .
Series/Parallel Connection
(four 6 VDC batteries to create a 12 VDC bank)
A s e r i e s / p a r a l l e l c o n n e c t i o n i n c r e a s e s b o t h v o l t a g e a n d c a p a c i t y u s i n g s m a l l e r ,
lower-voltage batteries. In the example at the left (Figure 9) four 6 VDC, 200 AHr b a t t e r i e s a r e
c o m b i n e d i n t o t w o p a i r s r e s u l t i n g i n a 1 2 V D C , 4 0 0 A H r b a n k .
Connect the negative battery terminal of one 6 VDC battery to the positive of the next (creating a pair)
using a short b attery cable.
C o n n e c t t h e n e g a t i v e b a t t e r y t e r m i n a l o f a n o t h e r 6 V D C b a t t e r y t o t h e p o s i t i v e o f its
next using a short battery cable (creating a second pair).
Connect the remaining negative battery terminal of the first pair to that of the second pair usin g a
short battery cable.
C o n n e c t t h e r e m a i n i n g p o s i t i v e b a t t e r y t e r m i n a l o f t h e f i r s t p a i r t o t h a t o f t h e
second pair using a short battery cable.
C o n n e c t t h e n e g a t i v e b a t t e r y c a b l e ( B L A C K ) f r o m t h e i n v e r t e r t o t h e e n d b a t t e r y ’ s
negative terminal. At the s ame time, connect a DC ground cable between the negat i v e t e r m i n a l a n d t h e
v e h i c l e ’ s D C g r o u n d i n g b u s .
C o n n e c t t h e p o s i t i v e b a t t e r y c a b l e ( R E D ) f r o m t h e i n v e r t e r t o t h e o p p o s i t e e n d
b a t t e r y ’ s p o s i t i v e t e r m i n a l .
