Installing a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 operating system
This topic applies to the following operating systems:
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Foundation (64-bit)
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (32-bit or 64-bit)
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (32-bit or 64-bit)
To install a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 operating system, do the following:
Notes:
• Ensure that you have prepared all the required items before installing an operating system. See “Before
installing an operating system” on page 1.
• Follow the instructions on the screen in addition to the instructions in this topic.
1. Insert the operating system installation disc into the optical drive that you have set as the first startup
device. Then, start the server from the optical drive.
2. Press any key on the keyboard as soon as the message “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD” is
displayed. Then, the Windows setup initialization begins.
3. When the Install Windows window is displayed, configure the following options and then click
Next
.

Language to install
•
Time and currency format
•
Keyboard or input method
4. Click
Install now
.
5. Type your product key and click
Next
. The product key information is available on the Microsoft
Certificate of Authenticity label or product packaging.
6. When the Microsoft license terms are displayed, select
I accept the license terms
and click
Next
.
7. Select
Custom (advanced)
.
8. When all hard disk drives available on the server are displayed, do one of the following to select or
create a drive partition on which you want to install the operating system:
Note:
A message “No drivers were found” might be displayed, indicating that your server does not have
a mass storage device driver installed. To install a mass storage device driver, connect a USB storage
device that contains the required RAID controller driver and click
Load Driver
.
• If you want to use the entire hard disk drive as one primary partition, select
Disk 0 Unallocated
Space
for the hard disk drive on which you want to install the operating system and then click
Next
.
After the setup process finishes, a drive partition will be automatically created.
• If you want to manually create a new drive partition, do the following:
a. Select
Disk 0 Unallocated Space
for the hard disk drive on which you want to install the operating
system. Then, click
Drive options (advanced)
.
b. Click
New
.
c. Type the amount of space (in MB) for the drive partition and click
Apply
.
Notes:
– If a message is displayed, indicating that the Windows operating system cannot be installed on
the drive partition you selected or created, click the message to view the minimum free space
that is required for the drive partition. Ensure that the drive partition you selected or created
meets the requirement.
