•  Call out an amount, such as 10 cents, and ask your child to find the coin worth that

amount. Name the coin, and then continue with other coins.

•  Have your child stack ten $1 bills in a pile, two $5 bills in a separate pile, and one $10 in

its own pile. Demonstrate that each stack has the same monetary value, even though
the number of bills in each stack differs.

•  Show the child that $1 is equal to 4 quarters, 10 dimes, 20 nickel, or 100 pennies.

•  Have the child find combinations of coins that equal $1 (e.g., 3 quarters, 2 dimes, 1

nickel).

•  Name a coin. Ask your child the coin’s value. Check answers by depositing that amount

into the ATM. How much are two of those coins worth?

•  Name an amount under $1. Have your child deposit that amount into the ATM.

For more experienced savers (learning about savings using the ATM and

real money

):

•  Check the savings balance on the ATM. Then, name amounts to withdraw. Each time,

ask, “Do you have enough in savings to withdraw that amount?”

•  Have the child save up for a special toy or item. Talk about how many dollars and cents

are needed to purchase it. Using real money, count up from the amount saved to the
amount needed. How much more money does the child need to save in order to make
the special purchase?

•  Promote the idea that money can be used for several different purposes. Encourage

children to save using the ATM, but to also share a small portion of their money with
someone in need or as a kind gesture, such as buying a friend an ice cream cone.
Children can spend the money they’ve saved toward achieving a goal, or spend by
keeping a small portion of money separate from deposit in the ATM. Talk about how
you budget at home to save for small or large goals.
