Make sure the “Use Windows to configure my wireless network setting” is checked. 
 
If your computer was previously connected to a preferred access point, remove all preferred 
access points (or at least disable the automatic connection). This will ensure that a 
connection is made only to the ad-hoc network to which you are trying to connect. 
 

1.  Click the Add button in the Preferred networks box.
