Continuity and resistance testing (
Continuity
)
With this function, a cable can be quickly and easily tested with a test voltage
for the type of continuity, contacts and resistances up to ~130 kΩ .
The test is started by briefly pressing the
Continuity
function key. The green
Cont
LED lights up bright (~130 kΩ) to dark (~0 Ω) depending on the level
of the resistor. In this way the resistance can be approximately estimated.
The continuity and resistance test can be used to determine whether a line is
patched in IT cabling. This test is also ideal for telecommunications cabling,
in order to check wire pairs for continuity and to estimate the line condition on
the basis of the resistance. If the resistance is >130 kΩ, the
Cont
LED flashes
every second, indicating that the resistance is outside the measurable range.
In addition, an acoustic signal is generated depending on the value of the
measured resistance whose frequency varies depending on the resistance.
At a resistance of 0 Ω (short circuit) a high tone sounds at 3 kHz, while at a
resistance of 130 kΩ a lower tone sounds at about 500 Hz. The pitch of the
tone can therefore be used to check the resistance of the line and of compo-
nents such as capacitors.
Warnung:
An external voltage applied to the test lead from outside
can falsify the sensitive continuity measurement or even damage
the device and must be avoided in any case!
Before activating the continuity test, the KE890/895 checks whether an exter-
nal voltage is present on the test lead. If this is the case, the device refuses
the resistance measurement for safety reasons and signals the external vol-
tage by a warning tone as well as the absence of the function LED.
Warnung:
If KE890/895 is connected to a live line after the continuity
test has been activated, this can damage the device, as the test for
external voltage is bypassed and can therefore no longer be carried
out!
