Ambience effects
This receiver is equipped w ith listening modes that allow
you to enjoy an enhanced sonic ambience w ith a variety of
video sources.
In order to obtain the optimum effect from the surround
modes, make sure to input the proper speaker settings
beforehand.

Surround modes

Dolby Digital
The Dolby Digital surround format lets you enjoy up to 5.1 channels
of digital surround sound from Dolby Digital program sources (such
as Laserdisc or DVD softw are marked
). Compared w ith
previous Dolby surround, Dolby Digital provides even better sound
quality, greater spatial accuracy, and improved dynamic range.
Although a full set of speakers (front left, right, and center, surround
left and right, and a subw oofer) is required for true 5.1 channel Dolby
Digital surround sound, this receiver lets you enjoy Dolby Digital (and
Dolby Surround) program sources, even if you connect only the front
speakers.
Although only Dolby Digital soundtracks incorporate a separate low
frequency channel, connecting a subw oofer w ill also improve deep
bass performance in the other surround modes.
The indication “
LFE” appears in the display w hen a signal is being
input for this channel.

Dolby Pro Logic
II
w as designed specifically to provide a new sense
of spatiality, directionality and articulation of sounds from Dolby
Surround encoded sources (such as video and Laserdisc softw are
marked
). This is achieved w ith an intelligent, built-in
feedback logic design, a matrix surround decoding and the decoding
of stereo, full bandw idth surround outputs. The PRO LOGIC
II
modes
programmed into this receiver are “ M OVIE” , “ M USIC” and “ PRO
LOGIC” . The “ M OVIE” mode of the PRO LOGIC
II
has preset
characteristics to produce a calibrated, high-level surround sound
playback w hile the “ M USIC” mode has user-adjustable characteristics
to offer the three optional controls, like “ Dimension” , “ Center
W idth” and “ Panoram a” m odes to allow optim ization of the
soundfields as desired. The “ Dimension” control allow s the user to
gradually adjust the soundfield either tow ards the front or tow ards
the rear; the “ Center Width” control allow s various adjustment of the
left-center-right speakers’ balance; the “ Panorama” extends the
front stereo image to include the surround speakers for an exciting
“ w raparound” effect w ith side w all imaging.

Note
LFE = Low Frequency Effects. This channel delivers separate non-
directional bass signals to the subw oofer for more dynamic deep
bass sound effects.
