Menu
A screen included on DVD Video discs that allows you
to select the titles of video or audio on the disc, or to
select the subtitles or camera angle, etc.
Multi-angle
A function that includes mutiple camera angles for the
same scene in a title and allows the user to select which
angle to use.
Multichannel
For DVD Audio discs, a single audio track can only
consist of one sound scene. However, they can include
three or more channels for the audio track.
Multilingual
A function that allows a single title to support several
languages.
Multi-story
A function that includes mutiple story variations for the
same title. Usually this allows you to select the story
you wish to follow when playing the disc, and to continue
making selections via a menu at each story junction
within the title.

One-sided disc
DVD discs that include signals that can only be read
from one surface. There are single layer and dual layer
one-sided discs.

Parental control function
A function that can automatically detect whether the
video or audio content of a disc is appropriate for the
audience (for example, educationally undesirable
scenes) by comparing the parental level stored on the
disc with the parental level set on the player. If the levels
match, or the level on the player is higher, you can play
the disc.
Playback control (PBC)
A signal included on (version 2.0) Video CD discs that
can control playback. Video CD discs that support this
function include a menu on the disc which allows you to
interact with the software, perform searches and other
functions.

Sampling frequency
The sampling frequency used when converting the
analog signal to a digital signal. Expressed as a rate of
times/second, it samples the analog signal and
determines the digital signal value.
Squeezed video
A method of storing 16:9 video data that is uniformly
shrunk (squeezed) to 4:3 video size.
When this is displayed on a TV or monitor the left and
right are stretched so that is return to the original ratio.
Surround
An audio encoding system that produces realistic,
theater-like sound to speakers placed around the listener.
S-Video format
A video signal that separates the brightness signal (Y)
and color signal (C) of a traditional video signal. It
produces an image with very little color blur.

Transfer rate
The amount of digital data transferred in one second,
using a transfer rate capable of MPEG-2 compression.
Two-sided discs
DVD discs that include signals that can be read from
both surfaces. The disc needs to be turned over.
