WHAT IS THE BSR (BATTERY‘SPRING RETURN’)
FAILSAFE
CONVERSION KIT?
The standard function of a J3C electric valve actuator is power open, power close. It stays put on external power failure.
Should the application require that the electric actuator is sent to a pre-determined position on loss of external power, the electric actuator
needs to be equipped with a system that can send the actuator to that pre-determined position without the use of external power. In the
J3C, the BSR function conversion plug and play kit provides this functionality by providing an alternate power source (battery) to drive the
motor to the required position. This function this creates what is known as
FAILSAFE.
The initials BSR stand for Battery ‘Spring Return’ and use the industry recognisable phrase ‘spring return’ simply to describe the function it
achieves - but there are no mechanical springs in the kit. Providing an alternate power supply (a) allows the same torque output actuator
that is used for an on-off actuator in this application, as the actuator does not have to overcome the extra torque the springs add in a true
mechanical spring return electric actuator, and (b) allows the installation of a plug and play function conversion kit that does not require a
change to the actuator’s external electrical connection.
The user friendly BSR failsafe plug and play function conversion kit is quick and easy to install, and can be configured on installation to send
the J3C electric actuator to either the closed position (fail closed), or the open position (fail open) on loss of external power.
HOW THE BSR SYSTEM WORKS
The BSR plug and play FAILSAFE function conversion kit comprises 2 x NiCad industrial rechargeable battery packs, a PCB which in simplistic
terms contains a system to trickle charge the batteries, to switch from external to battery power on the loss of external power and to initiate
LED flashing sequences, and a jumper to plug into the PCB.
Once installed, the batteries are constantly trickle charged whenever external power is applied, maintaining them at full charge so that pow-
er is available to draw at the moment the external power fails. When the external power fails, the BSR PCB switches from external to internal
power, and battery power is drawn to send the actuator to the pre-determined failsafe position, if not already in that position at the moment
of loss of external power.
On resumption of external power, the J3C failsafe electric actuator will respect the command signal being applied at the moment the exter-
nal power is restored. This may be different from the position seen at the moment of loss of external power.
