Components
•
Intelligent platform management bus (IPMB)
–
Provides communication between the onboard management
controllers, sensors and headers
•
Intelligent chassis management bus (ICMB)
–
Extends monitoring and communication capabilities outside
of the individual server
•
Advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI)
–
Specification for operating system directed configuration and
power control
–
Allows an ACPI aware operating system to place the system
into a sleep state to conserve energy
–
Supported sleep states: S0, S1, S4, and S5
Additional management components for the Intel Server Board SE7500WV2 include:
•
Intelligent platform management bus (IPMB):
Based upon the I
2
C bus – a communication bus designed in the
early 1980s to provide a communication link between integrated circuits – the IPMB provides a communication path
between the baseboard management controller (BMC) and the embedded management sensors, onboard headers and
key system components included on the server board. The SE7500WV2 includes a single public IPMB bus that
provides a 3-pin IPMB connector to support IPMB enabled add-in cards, and three private IPMB buses to support
communications between the BMC and the following onboard components:
−
Installed processors
−
E7500 chipset components
−
Installed DIMM memory modules
−
Network interface controller
−
SuperI/O
−
Heceta* sensor monitor
•
Intelligent chassis management bus (ICMB):
The SE7500WV2 includes a 5-pin ICMB connector onboard that
provides the interface to an optional ICMB card. The ICMB card includes the necessary ICMB transceivers to
provide a private management bus between the BMC and external ICMB capable products such as external hard
drive bays, uninterruptible powers supplies, and the server rack itself. The ICMB card also allows one server within
a group of servers connected together through a private ICMB management bus to act as the primary management
server to centralize management tasks.
•
Advanced configuration and power interface control (ACPI):
Advanced configuration and power control defines
a standard for operating system directed configuration and power control, and provides a well-defined specification
for power management, application programming interfaces, and plug and play. The SE7500WV2 supports ACPI
sleep functions through the ICH3 I/O, the SuperI/O and the BMC in conjunction with an ACPI compliant operating
system and provides the following sleep states.
−
S0: Working state – the server is operating normally
−
S1: Standby mode – the server is in a power-down state, the CPU is stopped, video display is suspended,
content of the server memory is maintained and all system hardware maintains context.
−
S4: Hibernation – the contents of the server memory are written to a special file on the hard drive and the server
then shuts down. Upon reboot from S4 hibernation state the server is restored to the original operating state.
−
S5: Power off – the server is shut down and powered off to 5-volt stand-by mode
