Dynamic
ICF
expansion
combines
the
benefits
of
ICFs
and
dynamic
CF
dispatching.
Dynamic
ICF
expansion
allows
you
to
define
a
coupling
facility
LP
that
uses
a
combination
of
dedicated
ICF
CPs
and
shared
general
purpose
CPs.
The
dedicated
ICF
CPs
run
a
continuous
polling
loop
looking
for
requests
to
process
while
the
shared
general
purpose
CPs
use
a
dynamic
coupling
facility
dispatch
algorithm.
This
provides
the
capability
to
allow
peak
workload
expansion
into
the
shared
pool
of
general
purpose
CPs.
For
each
ICF
coupling
facility
LP,
you
define
the
number
of
ICF
features
(maximum
varies
by
model
and
what
has
been
installed)
that
are
dedicated
to
that
LP
and
the
amount
of
additional
capacity
you
want
to
be
made
available
by
specifying
a
number
of
shared
general
purpose
CPs
the
ICF
LP
can
acquire.
You
specify
a
processing
weight
for
the
shared
CPs
as
you
would
for
any
other
LP
using
shared
CPs.
Since
the
coupling
facility
is
not
using
more
CP
resource
than
it
requires
on
the
shared
CPs,
you
must
set
the
processing
weight
to
a
high
value
but
this
will
not
affect
other
work
during
normal
operation.
IBM
recommends
that
the
processing
weight
you
specify
for
the
shared
logical
CPs
of
a
coupling
facility
using
dynamic
ICF
expansion
be
set
higher
than
the
weight
for
all
other
logical
CPs
that
are
sharing
the
same
physical
CPs.
On
occasions
when
the
shared
CP
is
needed
by
the
coupling
facility,
you
can
achieve
the
best
response
time
when
this
CP
is
dispatched
as
quickly
as
possible.
To
help
ensure
that
this
occurs,
you
should
assign
the
shared
coupling
facility
CP
a
weight
which
is
much
higher
than
that
of
the
other
LPs’
shared
CPs.
Note
that
when
you
define
and
activate
a
dynamic
ICF
configuration
for
a
coupling
facility
LP,
dynamic
CF
dispatching
will
be
forced
on
any
shared
CPs
in
that
coupling
facility.
You
cannot
use
the
DYNDISP
command
to
turn
it
off.
Enhanced
Dynamic
ICF
Expansion
Across
ICFs
Important
Note
Enhanced
Dynamic
ICF
Expansion
across
ICFs
is
not
recommended
for
coupling
facilities
that
are
used
for
primary
production
workload.
All
processors
assigned
to
the
coupling
facility
partition
should
be
dedicated
to
that
logical
partition
if
it
is
used
used
for
primary
production
workload.
An
alternative
dynamic
ICF
expansion
configuration
is
supported
where
a
CF
logical
partition
can
be
defined
with
a
mixture
of
both
dedicated
and
shared
ICF
processors.
This
has
all
the
same
operating
characteristics
of
the
original
dynamic
ICF
expansion
configuration
except
that
the
shared
processors
are
in
the
ICF
pool
rather
than
the
general
purpose
processor
pool.
These
shared
ICF
processors
may
be
used
by
other
CF
logical
partitions
using
only
shared
ICF
processors
and/or
other
CF
logical
partitions
using
a
mixture
of
dedicated
and
shared
ICF
processors.
The
following
table
lists
the
desired
actions
for
all
configurations
involving
coupling
facility
control
code.
It
covers
two
areas:
forcing
of
dynamic
CF
dispatching
and
defaulting
of
dynamic
CF
dispatching.
It
is
recommended
that
anytime
a
shared
processor
is
used
for
a
coupling
facility,
whether
standalone
or
ICF
processors,
that
DCFD
be
enabled
by
insuring
that
the
DYNDISP
coupling
facility
control
command
be
set
to
ON.
