Data cartridges
Note:
The Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 is designed for automation, with a form
factor similar to the 3590 tape cartridges. However, 3592 tape cartridges are
not compatible with 3590 tape drives and, likewise, 3590 tapes cannot be used
in the 3592 drives.
The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 is an advanced metal particle
tape specifically optimized for the enterprise tape environment. It is available in three
sizes.
The E05 tape drive uses E1 format when emulating the J1A tape drive. The E06 tape
drive does not support emulation. All cartridges can be encrypted. Capacities of data
cartridges can be increased through data compression, with the actual compression
and capacity depending upon the specific data. WORM (write once, read many)
cartridges are also available in all sizes (JW, JX, and JR media, respectively).
Note:
A minimum E05 drive microcode level of D3I1_D97 is required if the 3592
drive is to be used in an environment where the customer will be using
cartridges from a mixed scratch pool of cartridges, that is, where the cartridges
might be written on with various 3592 drive models. This microcode ensures
that a 3592 encrypted-cartridge format can be recognized by any 3592 drive,
regardless of whether the drive is encryption enabled or not. While the 3592
J1A is not supported in the 3577 tape library if the customer is going to be
using the cartridges in a mixed scratch pool that could be used in a 3592 J1A in
a different library, the minimum code for the J1A needs to be D3I0_C8E or
higher.
Cartridge memory is built into every data and cleaning cartridge to enhance the
functionality and reliability of the media. For more detailed information on 3592 data
and cleaning cartridges, refer to the
IBM System Storage TS3400 Tape Library Planning
and Operator Guide
.
Cleaning cartridges
There is a cleaning cartridge designed specifically for the 3592 tape drives. As with
the data cartridges, the 3592 cleaning cartridges are not interchangeable with 3590
cleaning cartridges. The cleaning cartridge also contains a Cartridge Memory (CM)
device, which will automatically keep track of the number of times it has been used.
Cleaning cartridges need to be replaced after 50 uses.
