Typical applications
PortStore5 is typically used to enable remote access and data capture for technology that is
controlled over RS-232. When the TCP/IP connection is unavailable, the device stores incoming
serial port data to its internal
4096 kB Flash memory.
If the PortStore is configured as a TCP Client, it attempts to establish a TCP/IP connection and
upload the data from the buffer. Data are sent in a “RAW” format in the order in which it was
received. After that, PortStore behaves as a standard terminal server with remote serial port access.

PBX systems – collecting billing data from a branch exchange
The PBX usually provides billing data – which extension called
what number at what time, and how long did the call last. It is often
desirable to store this data for a later analysis in special software.
The PBX sends the data to a RS232 serial port. However, it
usually does not have enough buffer memory if the receiving
device shuts down.
PortStore5 is used to receive this data over RS-232 and store it
into the internal Flash buffer. Once in a while, the special software
downloads the data over the Ethernet and processes it. It is often
the case that the server downloading the data is at the
headquarters, and the branches are all over the country and interconnected only with a
computer network. The buffer capacity is sufficient for 35,000 typical lines.

Storing data from a serial printer output
A central security alarm unit in a building prints basic information about the premises on a serial
printer. It is desirable to archive this output. However, a printer at a branch office needs to be
attended by personnel with at least some training, and the data is not available electronically at
the headquarters.
PortStore5 stores alarm data into the internal
Flash buffer. A server at the headquarters
regularly downloads and archives the data.
The buffer capacity is sufficient for 35,000
typical lines.
