I-COOL System
The smaller C series compressors include the I-COOL system. By rotating the suction
filter 180° the compressor operation can be switched from the motor cooling mode, to a
direct suction to the cylinders mode.
The range of compressors included is IR2C0173S to IR4C1145S.
x
SL(A) “suction gas cooling the motor”. Standard operating mode for:
x
Air-conditioning or medium temperature applications and for low
temperature applications with R-404A / R-507
x
The motor is cooled by suction gas. Additional cooling may be required
with extreme operating conditions. Refer to operating envelopes.
x
SL(B) “direct suction to cylinders”. Standard operating mode for:
x
Low temperature applications with R-22. Suction gas is fed directly into
the cylinders. This operating mode always requires external air-cooling,
either by a head cooling fan or locating the compressor in the condenser
air stream.
The application envelopes are marked to show when the I-COOL system applies. For
further details refer to Mechanical Design - Section 6 of this manual.
Liquid Injection
For larger Ingersoll Rand

¥
compressor models liquid injection is required for
R22 low temperature applications
.
When liquid injection is used added fan cooling is also
required. This can be accomplished by the use of a head-cooling fan or by locating the
compressor in the condenser airflow, if the velocity is sufficient. The compressor models
that require the use of liquid injection for R-22 low temperature are IR4C1480 through
IR6B6462.
Additional Fan Cooling
Head cooling fans are available for all compressor types. For dimensions and mounting
details refer to the Mechanical Design - Section 6 of this manual.
Although head fans can be used for all applications if desired, they are only required for
operating conditions shown in the following application envelopes.
If the compressor is located directly in the condenser air stream, and the air velocity is at
least 600 feet per minute, sufficient cooling will be provided without a head-cooling fan.
If the condenser fan operation is not continuous, for example if fan cycling is used for
head pressure control, then a head-cooling fan must be used.
