3. Use Error Messages and Internal Diagnostics
The net w ork analyzer has built-in self tests that run automatically at p o w er up. They can
lo cate man y problems in the system. If there is a failure of an y of the self-tests, a message
app ears on the display . During normal op eration, the net w ork analyzer con tinually monitors
it's op eration. When a failure or abnormal op eration is detected, a 'running error' message is
sen t to the display .
The follo wing pro cedure takes adv an tage of the net w ork analyzer's built-in self-tests and
monitoring to help lo cate a failure.
Procedure
This pro cedure assumes that the prop er instrumen t states and hardw are states ha v e b een
loaded from the conguration disk in to the net w ork analyzer. If not, refer to App endix C for
instructions to load the prop er mac hine dump conguration le.
1. Start with line p o w er OFF to all instrumen ts.
2. Switch the line p o w er ON to the instrumen ts in the following order:

As y ou turn on eac h instrumen t w atch the fron t panel indicators for p erformance as sho wn
in T able 6-2 . If an instrumen t do es not p o w er up prop erly , refer to the service man ual for
that instrumen t for troublesho oting information.
3. If the HP 85101 do es not complete the p o w er on sequence, refer to 'Netw ork Analyzer
Startup Problems' later in this c hapter.
4. If a \running error" message app ears on the net w ork analyzer display after the p o w er on
sequence is completed, note the error and then press the 4
