Plants are not growing
•
Make sure you are adding the correct amount of nutrients, if you do
not have enough nutrients the plants growth will be stunted.
•
Make sure your PH is between 5.5 – 6.5. The PH controls the nutrients
uptake of the plants. If it is not at the right levels the plant no longer
takes in nutrients or take less in.
•
Make sure your water is not too cold. The water temp should be 18C – 22C.
•
Make sure lights are close enough to the plants, you want your lights
about 6 inches from your plants.
•
It is not unusual for some seeds to not germinate, or for some plants to
have a better growing season than another plant. If all your plants but
one or two are growing, it is likely your issue is with the plant. You may
need to optimize your system to grow certain plants better (change
lighting cycles, nutrients, temp, color of light, etc.) There is lots of
information online to optimize for specific plants. We could not possibly
cover it all in this guide.
Plants are not flowering / fruiting
•
As your plants enter the flowering and fruiting phase you will need to
adjust your system to help optimize. We recommend changing light
cycle to 12hr on 12hr off. The goal of this is to “trick” the plants into
thinking it is autumn. With this technique we can force a plant to flower
at any time of the year.
•
You will need to change your nutrient ratio (see page 18).
•
If you have a self-pollinating plant you can just gently shake the top of
the plant and it will pollinate the flowers without needing to use a
brush.
•
Some plants will not self-pollinate, you will have to get a paint brush (or
similar object) and brush pollen from flower to flower to pollinate the
plant. If you do not pollinate the plant, you will not get fruit.
•
To optimize flowering / fruiting we recommend changing lights out for
a “warmer” or lower color lighting. 3500K lights are great, or HPS if
you are using HID.
Indeterminants vs Determinants
•
An Indeterminant plant will grow if it has the environment to do so. A
Determinant will only grow to a certain height. For this reason,
determinants are strongly recommended for hydroponics. There are
many varieties for different plants (cucumber, tomatoes, beans) that can
be determinates. Planting determinants saves space and keeps one
plant from choking out smaller plants. This allows you to space your
plants optimally.
