3D Movie
3D Movie is a certain kind of virtual surround sound sys-
tem. With this system, some more loudspeakers can be
virtually created without installing any physical loudspeak-
ers. Thus only the TV’s own loudspeakers are needed to
create a movie theatre sound experience. The three dimen-
sional effect is created artificially by changing the frequency
response so that the sound appears to come from a differ-
ent direction than that in which the loudspeaker is actually
situated.
The filters in the system are based on Head Related Trans-
fer Functions (HRTF). 3D Movie requires a Dolby Pro Logic
encoded transmission in order to operate correctly. This is
because the system uses the center and surround chan-
nels in addition to the left and right channels. 3D Movie
operates only in phantom mode. This means that the center
channel is added to the left and right channels. The effect
control in the sound menu corresponds to the level con-
trol of the surround channel in the Dolby Pro Logic sys-
tem.
When the transmission includes Dolby Pro Logic encoded
sound and the receiver is in AUTO mode, the software au-
tomatically changes the receiver to 3D Movie mode, as-
suming that the transmission is in stereo (Nicam or A2)
and the WSS data includes the required Dolby bit.
Graphic equalizer
In the digital sound processor there is a seven band graphic
equalizer for user adjustment and a loudspeaker frequency
response correction. Each of the seven bands (only three
are drawn in the principle diagram below) have two out-
puts. The channels, which have loudspeaker frequency re-
sponse equalization, have loudspeaker equalization and
user defined gains (gGLE). The channels without loud-
speaker equalization only have user defined gains (gGE).
In the sound menu, there are four different pre-set choices:
Music, Speech, Flat and Preferred. In the Music, Speech
and Flat modes, the equalizer takes the pre-settings from
the NV RAM. In Flat mode, the equalizer settings are fixed
at the middle position. Only in Preferred mode can the user
change the settings.

Principle of the Graphical Equalizer
Tone control
The tone control stages, bass and treble, are not controlla-
ble separately as bass and treble controls, but they oper-
ate as a loudness control. This means that the tone control
is dependant on the volume control.
Noise generator
The noise generator program is used to set the channel
levels equal. Normally, the user needs this program only
during placement of the loudspeakers. The noise genera-
tor feeds the noise sample to each connected loudspeaker
channel in turn. This helps to adjust the relative balance
between the separate left, right, center and rear level set-
tings with respect to the listeners.
