5.6 EMC protection
Important
Load cells with shielded, round cables are EMC-tested in accordance with EC
directives and bear the CE mark. However, you must connect the shield of the
connection cable to the shielding housing of the electronics to ensure EMC
protection for the measurement chain.
Electrical and magnetic fields often induce interference voltages in the
measuring circuit. Therefore:
S
Use only shielded, low-capacitance measurement cables (HBM cables fulfill
both conditions).
S
Do not route measurement cables parallel to power lines or control circuits.
If this is unavoidable, protect the measurement cable, e.g. using rigid steel
conduits.
S
Avoid stray fields from transformers, motors and contact switches.
S
Do not ground the transducer, amplifier and display more than once.
S
Connect all the devices in the measurement chain to the same protective
conductor.
Planning the shielding design
Due to the numerous application options and differing local constraints, we can
only provide you with general information on correct connection. The shielding
design suitable for your application must be planned locally by an appropriate
specialist. HBM load cells with shielded, round cables are EMC-tested in
accordance with EC directives and bear the CE mark.
Please note:

Connect the whole surface of the connection cable shield to the shielding
housing of the electronics.
S
If using several load cells, connect the whole surface of the shields to the
junction box (grouping transducer signals, e.g. type VKK2 from HBM).
S
From there, connect the whole surface of the measurement cable for the
electronics to the junction box and to the shielding housing of the
electronics.
